Firefighter – Fire Prevention Officer

Duties and Responsibilities:
Emergencies

• Respond promptly to emergency calls, assess situations, and take appropriate actions for fire, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, rescues, hazardous materials incident, and natural disasters.
• Employ firefighting techniques, including operating hoses, pumps, vehicle extrication equipment, ropes and hardware, water rescue equipment, safely and efficiently.
• Provide medical aid to individuals injured in emergencies until advanced medical help arrives.
• Conduct search rescue operations to locate and evacuate individuals.
• Handle hazardous material incidents by containing spills, decontaminating affected areas, and mitigating risks to public safety and the environment.

Maintenance & Preparedness

• Inspect and maintain Emergency Services and Fire Protection equipment. This includes testing of equipment, and apparatus as required by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
• Drive company vehicles in a safe and responsible manner and maintain vehicles in excellent working order and keep vehicles clean at all times.
• Participate in fire drills and emergency preparedness exercises.
• Coordinate and support fire prevention week

Administrative Duties

• Assist with the development of site-specific emergency response plans and procedures to ensure a coordinated and effective response to all emergencies across the MD of Bighorn.
• Perform inspections, testing, maintenance, and inventory of medical, fire protection and life safety equipment and systems.
• Carry out additional responsibilities at the Fire Station and in the field as assigned by the Fire Chief.
• Maintain an accurate logbook as per government regulations and complete accurate reports detailing emergency responses, including actions taken, resources used, and outcomes achieved.
• Completion of daily paperwork such as vehicle Pre-Trip Inspections, Safety Meetings, etc…
• Participate in new and ongoing training to keep knowledge and skills up to date.
• Keep up to date with site-specific fire and rescue guidelines and procedures, medical protocols, rescue plans, and pre-incident plans.
• Document and report any incidents involving personnel or equipment.
• Maintain a respectful work environment by demonstrating positive workplace behavior.
• Always adhere to all health and safety procedures.
• Assist the Fire Chief with community outreach such as public events, school visits, and outreach programs to foster positive relationships and enhance public safety awareness.
• Stay current with the Alberta building and fire code, standards, and best practices.

Fire Prevention

• Conduct inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to ensure compliance with fire codes and regulations.
• Identify fire hazards and recommend corrective actions to property owners/business.
• Educate the public on fire safety practices through presentations, workshops, and community outreach.
• Review building plans and permit applications for fire safety compliance.
• Investigate fire incidents to determine origin and cause and assist in prevention strategy development.
• Maintain records of inspections, violations, and follow-up actions.
• Collaborate with other departments and external agencies to promote fire prevention initiatives.
• Inspect smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and other fire protection equipment.
• Coordinate the FireSmart program in the MD and with external and neighboring agencies.
• Conduct FireSmart Assessments as required.

Qualifications

• Must be able to successfully complete the initial and ongoing annual fitness evaluation for the ability to work in various environments and conditions.
• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary education)
• Must have NFPA 1001 level 2
• Must have NFPA 1002 (Pump Operator and Driver)
• Must have NFPA 1140 “1051” (Wildland Firefighting)
• Must have NFPA 470 “1072” (Hazards Material, Operations Level)
• Must have a minimum of advanced first aid with CPR or FMR.
• Valid Safety Codes Officer (Basic) in the fire discipline is considered an asset or working towards completion.
• Certification in Fire Inspector I/II or Fire Prevention Officer (e.g., NFPA, IFSAC, or ProBoard) considered as an asset.
• NFPA 1006 (Standard for Technical rescue Personnel Professional Qualification) considered an asset.
• Clean drivers abstract with class 3 with Q endorsement/air brakes.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in firefighting, fire inspection, or fire prevention.
• Strong knowledge of fire codes, building codes, and safety regulations.
• Proficiency in conducting fire safety inspections and writing detailed reports.
• Excellent communication and public education skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with emergency services and the public.
• Familiarity with fire investigation procedures and fire protection systems.
• Must be proficient with Microsoft Suite.
