The three new fact sheets provide more detail on amendments to the Act.
Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI) has released three new factsheets providing further detail on recent amendments to the Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) under Bill 44, the Agricultural Operation Practices Amendment Act.
The newly released factsheets are designed to support municipalities and agricultural producers in navigating the updated legislative framework, ensuring that rural communities can take advantage of new opportunities while maintaining strong environmental stewardship.
The three fact sheets include:
- Bill 44, Agricultural Operation Practices Amendment Act: offering farmers, ranchers and agriculture processors a sustainable alternative for managing organic materials, which highlights how the amendments offer farmers, ranchers, agri-processors and biodigesters sustainable alternatives for managing organic materials.
- Organic materials defined under the Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA): understanding what’s included, which explains what types of organic materials, including digestate, are included under the updated legislation.
- Managing organic materials under the Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA): sustainable alternatives for managing organic materials, which provides guidance on sustainable practices for handling organic materials in alignment with the new amendments.
The On-Farm Storage and Land Application Code has also been updated to reflect the amendments. The Code outlines lists of allowable organic materials, livestock and storage siting units used to calculate minimum distance separation for manure storages and collection areas, and book values for manure characteristics, production volumes, and land base requirements for application.
RMA encourages members to review and share these factsheets within their networks. They provide valuable guidance for understanding and implementing the recent changes to AOPA.
