Drought Flood Protection Program Funding

The next intake for Drought and Flood Protection Program funding opens on October 1, 2025.

Introduced in Budget 2024, the Government of Alberta’s Drought and Flood Protection Program (DFPP) is a multi-year grant program that provides funding to help municipalities and Indigenous communities improve their long-term resilience to drought and floods events.

Support can be accessed through the DFPP for the design and construction of projects that protect critical infrastructure from flooding and drought and help to ensure public safety. Projects eligible for funding include, but are not limited to:

  • Drought and flood-proofing, or relocation of critical infrastructure and infrastructure required to access those services.
  • Structural measures such as berms, flood walls, bank protection and stabilization works, retention ponds, and diversion structures intended to protect critical infrastructure and ensure public safety.
  • Purchase of property for the purpose of relocation or for access to and/or construction of a project.
  • Bio-retention infrastructure designed to increase flood attenuation and reduce the impacts of drought.

The next intake period for the DFPP runs from October 1, 2025 to December 1, 2025. Applications for shovel-ready projects are strongly encouraged, but all projects that meet the eligibility criteria will be considered for funding.

Detailed program information and DFPP application forms can be accessed on the DFPP website.
