The Government of Alberta is investing $7 million to improve water quality and help protect communities from floods and droughts.
The Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program (WRRP), administered by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA), provides funding to municipalities and non-profit organizations for projects that improve the long-term ability of watersheds to mitigate flood and drought impacts and protect the health and safety of Albertans.
Successful projects address 4 priorities:
- Restoring and enhancing degraded or lost wetlands, riparian areas and floodplains within priority watersheds to improve flood and drought resiliency.
- Conserving critical wetlands, riparian areas and floodplain features within priority watersheds, with these areas being given greater consideration for preserving by decision makers and landowners.
- Increasing stewardship of watersheds through greater understanding and awareness among the public, land-use decision makers and other key stakeholders of the importance of watershed functions, and their relationship to flood and drought mitigation.
- Making data, research and information publicly available to support government, municipality, and non-profit groups’ decision-making.
The Government of Alberta recently announced $7 million in new funding for the WRRP, which includes $3.5 million already allocated to 20 new projects designed to help restore and protect watersheds across the province.
Applications are now open for an additional $3.5 million in funding to support other watershed resilience and restoration projects. Non-profit organizations, municipalities, and Indigenous communities can apply for a share of this funding by applying before September 15, 2025.
