Summary

The Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) represents Alberta’s 69 counties and municipal districts as an independent association. Since 1909, the association has helped rural municipalities achieve strong, effective, local government. The RMA provides advocacy, insurance, and business services, including cooperative procurement through the Canoe Procurement Group of Canada.

The RMA is seeking a Visual Communications Designer

JOB DESCRIPTION

As part of the Marketing & Communications department and reporting to the General Manager of Marketing & Communications, this position supports all internal departments of the association through design of marketing materials, branding support, and other visual communications.

This is a full-time, permanent position. The position will be working directly from the RMA offices in Nisku, AB.

Key Responsibilities

Designing, updating, and maintaining materials and publications to support RMA activities, potentially including (but not limited to):

  • Templates (typically created in Microsoft Office programs for use by non-technical staff)
  • Proposal documents and reports to support Business Services and Advocacy activities
  • Annual report and year-in-review documents
  • Directories of approved suppliers and programs
  • Marketing materials, sales collateral, and presentations
  • Infographic design
  • Campaign design
  • Form design and development
  • Event branding and design (tradeshows and conventions), including but not limited to: handbooks, app graphics, signage, nametags, etc.
  • Working with the Marketing & Communications department between RMA internal stakeholder departments to communicate design needs and gather content to support material development.
  • Serving as an advisor to the General Manager of Marketing & Communications and other decision makers on implications of branding decisions and policy.
  • Assisting or covering for other department staff during vacations and crunch times.
  • Supporting association events, occasionally through on-site assistance.
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A post-secondary designation in graphic design, new media, or a related discipline.
  • At least three years of experience in professional graphic design, visual communications, or related, with a strong portfolio of previous work.
  • Proficient in design software, especially for photo editing, graphic design, and document layout (print and digital). Experience in Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign preferred.
  • Able to work within an established visual style while incorporating new creative ideas.
  • Comfortable in a Microsoft Windows working environment.
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills.
  • Personable and able to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Able to work in a team environment, including keeping others appropriately informed.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Understanding that progress must be shown and be measurable.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision; self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Business-level proficiency or fluency in French would be an asset.
  • Experience in photography or videography would be an asset.
  • Video editing or animation skills would be an asset.
  • Some knowledge and appreciation of rural issues would be an asset.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with multiple groups
  • Experience working on multiple projects concurrently
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively
