Reporting to the Superintendent of Water and Wastewater, the Utilities Technician II assists in the compliant, safe, and efficient operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant. This position may, from time to time, be required to assist in the compliant, safe, and efficient operation and maintenance of the water distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, and drainage systems.

Responsibilities
- This position is mainly responsible for assisting in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the water treatment system.
- Assisting in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the water distribution system.
- Assisting in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the wastewater treatment and collection system.
- Assisting in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the drainage system.
- Responsible for assisting in meeting all Federal and Provincial Legislative Regulations.
- Responsible for assisting in reporting data analysis to multiple stakeholders and agencies.
- Ensure quality control and standard method practices are being utilized to ensure the production of safe drinking water and environmentally acceptable wastewater and drainage effluent.
- Assists with contracted services for utility projects.
- Professionally interacting with all internal and external customers and stakeholders.
- Participate in all required daily activities while ensuring that priorities in safety and compliance are always being met.
- Assisting with investigations and documentation of any/all concerns regarding water/wastewater/drainage system management.
- Must stay current with all new technologies, standard methods, and legal requirements.
- Responsible for upgrading education as required by employer and Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) certification.
- Participation on the on-call rotation (must live within 30 minutes of Wetaskiwin and the Water Treatment Plant (WTP)).
- Repair and maintenance of specific job-related equipment, structures etc.
- Health and Safety is paramount for this position as working alone conditions can occur.
- Ensuring compliance with performance requirements within the corporate policy.
- Participating in safety and tailgate talks, inspections, observations, and reporting.
- Completes regular vehicle maintenance checks and associated paperwork.
- Assists in restoring job sites back to their original state ensuring best practices are utilized.
- Maintains a healthy and safe work environment for the crew, the public, and the customer.
- Other related duties as required.
Requirements:
Education, Experience and Qualifications
- Grade 12 / GED or equivalent
- Attained certificates in Level 2 Water Treatment and at least Level 2 in one other discipline.
- Level 1 in at least one other discipline or the ability to obtain within one year.
- A valid Class 5 AB Driver’s License is required but a class 3 or higher is preferred.
- Successful completion of a post-secondary program or degree in Water and Wastewater, Science, Environmental Studies, Engineering, or Hydrogeology will be considered an asset.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience within a municipality is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a class 3 water treatment plant and prefer experience in a class 2 wastewater treatment facility.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a class 2 or higher wastewater collection and water distribution system.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience with drinking water safety plan development will be considered an asset.
- Good Public Relations and Conflict resolution skills are required.
- Ability to operate equipment, and possess a clean drivers abstract.
- Ability to install water meter devices and related equipment.
- An intermediate knowledge of general mechanical practices.
- Ability to forecast inventory requirements / troubleshoot.
- Ability to interpret and maintain approvals and Provincial and Federal regulatory requirements.
- Experience with computer systems including meter reading and SCADA is preferred.
- A team player that will embrace a culture of acceptance and providing a safe and inclusive workplace.
- Ability to apply knowledge and problem-solving skills in a timely manner to respond to issues.
- Adapts quickly to change with minimal supervision.
- Able to meet physical demands of position.
- Accurate documentation of work completed is imperative.
COVID-19 Requirement
Successful candidates will need to be double vaccinated or provide a negative rapid COVID19 test result. The City is providing testing kits at this time, however this is based on supply. If testing kits cannot be procured as long as required, employee’s will be responsible to get rapid tested on their own time and at their own expense.
