Big Lakes County has an exciting opportunity for a Transportation Projects Foreman to join our Public Works team. The incumbent provides a variety of construction, maintenance and repair services to roads, municipal drainage, landfill sites, bridges, and other municipal infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Assist the Manager of Transportation in the day-to-day management of roads and operations, including directing the day-to-day work of the Transportation Operators and maintaining a work environment that promotes staff participation and teamwork.
- Assist the Manager of Transportation in organization, scheduling and control of operations and Projects.
- Shares supervision equally with the Transportation Maintenance Foreman of the Transportation Operators.
- Provide recommendations and input to the Manager of Transportation in administrative and supervisory functions, including, but not limited to, recruitment, training, performance reviews and discipline in accordance with Big Lakes County’s policies and procedures.
- Ensure that occupational health and safety practices are strictly observed by all transportation employees and contractors.
- Provide training, guidance, and encouragement to assigned operators on specific tasks and projects
- Oversee contractors and Transportation Operators who are engaged for projects such as but not limited to; road construction, paving, shoulder pulls, bridge maintenance, brushing, culvert installs; ensure that work is performed according to the conditions of hire and tendering agreements.
- Patrol designated areas of the municipality regularly to note problems and situations that require repair and correction; report results of troubleshooting to the Manager of Transportation that will assign the appropriate staff to correct the problems or situations.
- Recommend major repairs and/or replacement of equipment to the Manager of Transportation.
- Provide input to the Manager of Transportation on Department budget issues.
- Respond to complaints from the public and if necessary, forwards complaints to the Manager of Transportation.
- Sign timesheets daily for the projects the Transportation Operators and day labor equipment.
- Rotational on-call is required.
- Respond to after hour emergency calls as required.
- Provides backup to the Transportation Maintenance Foreman as directed by Transportation Manager.
- Other duties as required.
Requirements:
Education & Experience:
- Civil/Construction/Engineering Diploma from a recognized technical institute or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
- Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation from the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (A.S.E.T.) preferred.
- Proficiency with computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office Suite, County GIS, and GPS systems.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license, provide a current drivers abstract.
- Provide Criminal Record Check.
- Willingness to take on other training as required.

- Excellent organizational skills that demonstrate the ability to resolve conflicting priorities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team capacity, exercise sound judgement, discretion, tact, and confidentiality at all times.
- Trouble shooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret, implement and adhere to organizational policies and procedures.
Working Conditions & Physical Environment:
- Working in outdoor environment – heat, cold, dry, dusty and/or wet conditions.
- Use and operation of vehicle and equipment.
- Physical job requirements: May require lifting and carrying of up to 23 kg, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting,
- Use of Computer and Cell Phone.
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment.
