The Town of Stony Plain Planning & Infrastructure department is currently recruiting for a permanent full-time Sustainability Planner. Under the supervision of the Manager of Planning and Development, this position is responsible for coordinating all municipal initiatives regarding planning and sustainability. This includes the coordination of various policy based strategies for sustainable practices and services, processing of planning, land use and subdivision applications, as well as joint planning and sustainability initiatives undertaken with our regional partners. This role also involves map preparation and analysis, creating and delivering presentations, and developing and executing engagement plans.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Develops, coordinators, implements and monitors municipal planning projects, strategies, and initiatives.
Prepares, reviews, implements and monitors statutory and non-statutory plans, bylaws, and Town policies on planning related matters.
Liaises with Town Council, Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, other planning bodies, other governments and agencies, the development community and general public on planning related matters.
Assists the Manager of Planning and Development in the formulation and development of a long-term business strategy for planning initiatives.
Identifies opportunities to improve Stony Plain's sustainability; evaluates the opportunities for feasibility, cost effectiveness, and acceptability.
Contributes to Town's public sustainability awareness programs and community sustainability stewardship activities and events.
Follows all federal, provincial and municipal acts, regulations, bylaws, agreements, policies and procedures.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a post-Secondary degree in planning or a related field with 2-5 years’ directly related experience in a municipal land use planning field. Additional education and experience in areas such as sustainability, environment or geographic information systems will be considered an asset. General knowledge of bylaws, planning documents, Municipal Government Act, Subdivision and Development Regulation and the land use planning framework in Alberta will ensure success in this position. This individual will have strong organizational skills, a high degree of personal initiative, integrity and professionalism and ability to establish effective working relationships in a multi-disciplinary team environment. Membership or eligibility for membership in the Alberta Professional Planners Association and Canadian Institute of Planners will be required.
