The Town of Stony Plain Planning & Infrastructure department is currently recruiting for a permanent, part-time, Senior Building Safety Codes Officer. Under the supervision of the Manager of Planning and Development, this position is responsible for the life safety of all buildings through compliance monitoring in accordance with the Safety Codes Act, the Alberta Building Code and the Town’s Uniform Quality Management Plan, and is accountable for the effective and timely delivery of safety code services in the Town. This position will also provide leadership, coordination, collaboration and mentorship to all safety codes personnel and act as the liaison to industry and members of the public.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Provide administrative, technical and building code compliance monitoring services for all buildings, consultation services and technical advice to architects, engineers, building contractors, permit applicants, and other stakeholders during the design stage to ensure compliance with the Alberta Building Code.
Conduct preliminary plan and documents reviews in consultation with contractors, landowners and designers, ensuring compliance with minimum standards of the Alberta Building Code.
Consult and engage with various external stakeholders such as contractors, engineers, architects, building owners, Capital Health Authority, OHS, Municipal Affairs and the province of Alberta.
Provide leadership and coaching of safety codes personnel.
Review relevant procedures, policies and bylaws and suggest required changes.
Assists in the development and review of the Quality Management Program and develops policies and procedures and internal audits of the program.
Follows all relevant federal, provincial and municipal acts, regulations, bylaws, agreements, policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate for this position must meet the pre-qualification, educational, and relevant experience requirements for the building discipline as prescribed by the Safety Codes Council. The candidate must hold a valid Certificate of Competency as a Building Safety Codes Officer Part 3, HVAC All or equivalent. A post-secondary trade certification as a Journeyman Carpenter is preferred with a minimum of 10 – 12 years relevant building construction experience. A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Building Safety Codes Officer in a senior or supervisory role would be required. This individual will have expert knowledge of the Safety Codes Act, Alberta Building Code, Permit Regulation, QMP, and related standards, bylaws and construction methodology.
