Mission

The mission of the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) is to “empower its members through proactive leadership, strategic partnerships, effective advocacy and collective business services”. RMA Insurance (a subsidiary of the Rural Municipalities of Alberta) is one of Canada’s oldest municipal/public sector insurance programs and has been protecting members since 1955. RMA Insurance’s portfolio insures over $12B in assets and over 13,000 vehicles, making it one of the largest as well.

The Position

Risk Engineering is a critical service that RMA Insurance provides for the members of its insurance program. The risk engineer operates within the Risk Management Department of RMA Insurance and is considered an integral component of the valued added services that we provide for our members. In tandem with their business and insurance acumen the Risk Engineer will also display basic interview, report writing, and risk evaluation skills as you develop an understanding of the Risk Engineering role. As a risk engineering professional, the successful candidate will be responsible for preparing surveys for current or prospective members, including comprehensive reports to identify hazards and potential loss-producing exposures as well as providing a thorough evaluation of controls in place or those that are recommend or required.

The Risk Engineer will have access to highly confidential member and association information, and it is expected and required that information be held in the strictest confidence.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Duties include:

Prepares surveys for current or prospective members.

Prepares reports to identify potential loss-producing exposures and an evaluation of controls in place or those that are recommended/required.

Visits existing member facilities to check on recommendations, evaluate changes in exposures, and/or provide risk improvement services.

Interact with members, brokers, and underwriters.

Prepares reports, letters and surveys that are written in accordance with loss control guidelines.

Completes, member reviews and evaluations in support of our underwriting departments, allowing for more decisions to maximize surplus and growth.

Focused on member services on-going and close collaboration with members on the identification and control of claim trends and property casualty related exposures.

Provides members with training on safety program improvements and exposure control techniques such as accident investigation, safety committee development, facility inspection programs, ergonomics, property conservation and better understanding of provincial standards.

Builds and maintains productive relationships with internal and external customers, including members, broker, claims staff and agency staff.

Requirements:

Qualifications

A minimum of 5 years collective experience in Risk Management, Claims Adjusting and/or General Insurance fields.

Possess demonstrated field experience of highly protected risk, specialized industry and/or boiler and machinery.

Knowledge of ‘all risk’ property loss control and experience in performing property field surveys of commercial and light to medium hazard industrial occupancies.

Possess strong analytical skills.

Proficiency in automatic sprinkler system hydraulic calculations & fire protection water supply analysis considered an asset.

Proficiency in assessing exposures from wind, flood, and earthquakes.

Strong oral and written communication/interpersonal skills.

Enthusiastically supports change and seeks new challenges.

Demonstrated organization skills in planning and scheduling various priority issues.

Proficient in all applications of Microsoft Office.

Education and Professional Designation

Member of APEGA as a Professional Engineer licensed to practice in the province of Alberta.

Member of ASET with a C.E.T. or higher designation.
