Regional Fire Chief / Director of Emergency Management (DEM)

The MD of Taber invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Regional Fire Chief/Director of Emergency Management (DEM).

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Regional Fire Chief will provide professional leadership, support, and direction to the existing leadership team of the MD of Taber fire services and the MD Emergency Management structure.

Leading a team of 1 fulltime Deputy Chief and up to 5 volunteer station Chiefs with a total staff complement of approximately 90, the Regional Fire Chief provides overall supervision and supports to station chiefs for all regional fire services for the MD of Taber. Furthermore, the Chief may be required to provide on scene support or as the incident commander.

Key Responsibilities Include:

The Regional Fire Chief of the MD is responsible for the overall operation of the fire services in accordance with municipal bylaws, departmental objectives, plans, programs, and policies approved by Council in accordance with the various Provincial or Federal statutes and municipal bylaws.

The position requires an individual who is a natural leader, developing and maintaining cooperation and teamwork while leading volunteer departments and the emergency management structure of the MD.

It will be important for the candidate to be able to coach employees and volunteers to optimize performance and motivation, determining training and development needs and setting performance standards.

Requirements:

With a team spread across the MD in multiple stations, clear communication both in formal and interpersonally will be imperative along with your demonstrated ability to make decisions based on logical evaluation of alternatives shared by others while assessing the advantages and risks in timely decision making.

As the ideal candidate, you will also bring a financial acuity through creative and innovative ways of improving the organization (cost reductions, use of resources, policies, procedures) generating useful new ideas, approaches, or techniques.

In the same light, the candidate should be a strong negotiator, demonstrating strength and competency in bargaining for proposals and/or resources (budget, people, technology) and finding “win-win” solutions.
