Summary

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Town of Slave Lake, reporting to the Manager of Planning and Development, this position is responsible for work related to municipal planning and development for the Town of Slave Lake.

Key Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development to further develop planning skillset
  • Provides land use and development information to the public, developers, consultants, contractors, etc.
  • Ensures input from various departments as well as other authorities regarding the issuance of development permits.
  • Responsible for assisting in the development process through administration of the Land Use Bylaw, issuance of development permits, letters of compliance, and performing enforcement duties as pertaining to development issues.
  • Assist in the administration and management of all statutory documents, studies, reports, and manuals that relate to planning and development issues.
  • Responsible for the preparation of reports to Town Council, the Municipal Planning Commission and the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board pertaining to matters of planning and development, as required.
  • Attends and makes presentations at meetings of Town Council and other relevant committees on behalf of the Town, as required.
  • Issues Stop Orders within the parameters established by the Manager of Planning and Development.
  • Conducts special planning studies, complex research projects and investigations within the parameters established by the Manager of Planning and Development.
  • Work with the Manager of Planning and Development to develop a strategy for capital planning and participates in the implementation of capital projects within the parameters established.
  • Be able to produce maps, schedules for all reports, etc. from the existing mapping software.
  • Keep the Manager of Planning and Development informed of all matters.
  • Provide backup for the Planning Department team members in their absence.
  • Work towards an Applied Land Use Planning Certificate through the University of Alberta
  • Monitors trends, forecasting, issues, ensuring proactive approach to the growth and development of the Town of Slave Lake within the parameters established by the Manager of Planning and Development.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years planning and development related experience in a municipal government setting.
  • A diploma in Urban and Regional Planning or equivalent would be an asset.
  • Conversant with Planning Regulations Process and Administration

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Proven communication and public relations skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and other office technology.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills including good records management and ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Good research and ability to compile complex technical documents.
  • Proven reliability and discretion in following policy and procedures (e.g. in relation to the handling of confidential information and records).
  • Ability to analyze complex issues, identify options and make recommendations.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

  • Occasional light lifting.
  • Long periods of sitting.
  • Extensive use of computer and telephone.
  • Good lighting, temperature, and noise control.
  • Normal working day consists of a maximum of 7.5 hours; however, occasional extended hours may be required.

Must adhere to all safety standards under the Occupational Health and Safety Guide, Town Policies and Procedures and WHMIS Guidelines.  For specific responsibilities of this position, refer to the Town’s Health and Safety Policy, Section 2 – Responsibilities for CAO, Directors, Supervisors and Workers.

All personnel working at the Town of Slave Lake are governed by the Health & Safety Policy.

  • Ensure proper ergonomic requirements are met and good ergonomic procedures are practiced
  • Ensures all operations are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with Town Policies and all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
