Peace Officer

This position is responsible for enforcing County bylaws and selected Provincial Statutes. Will respond to and investigate complaints, assist in prosecution, traffic matters and emergency situations within the County jurisdiction, and participate in public education, awareness, and cooperative initiatives with the public from time to time.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Perform duties in accordance with Sturgeon County Peace Officer Handbook.

Work as required in a variety of hours, which include during the daytime, evenings, and weekends.

Respond to complaints from the public and other County departments regarding violations of County bylaws and Provincial Statutes.

Conduct investigations, collect evidence, and deal directly with complainant and violator, resolve issue through court action, warnings, or mediation. Enter all investigations into County software system.

Conduct proactive patrols for bylaw and provincial infractions.

Perform related contractual services (i.e.: Town contracts) as assigned.

Act as resource person for inquiries regarding County bylaws and provincial statutes whether by public, media or County staff request.

Liaise with legal counsel and court officials. Prepare court briefs and serve documents. Testifies for Crown in provincial and bylaw matters.

Assist in traffic matters involving County fires and emergency situations, processions, motor vehicle collisions and traffic related enforcement campaigns.

Enhance RCMP traffic enforcement efforts as assigned.

Conduct public presentations/displays as assigned.

Liaise with the R.C.M.P., Peace Officers from other municipalities or law enforcement officials for the purpose of carrying out the duties of the position.

May assist other personnel as an escort and accompaniment on matters that may involve a security concern.

Issue fire permits.

Recommend additions or amendments to bylaws.

Prepare information for input into administrative reports.

Maintain bylaw vehicle and equipment.

Perform Animal Control duties as required.

Perform other related duties as required.

Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

Requirements:

Possess a college diploma in Law Enforcement or equivalent or a combination of relevant education.

Experience in law enforcement work.

Possess a valid class 5 driver’s license.

Possess a valid Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (P.A.R.E) certification.

Must be eligible for Community Peace Officer Appointment Level One (CPOI).

Meet criteria to pass an Alberta Justice Security Clearance.

Hold Radar/LIDAR Certification.

Possess a Standard First Aid, CPR and AED Certificate.

Good relationships with residents payers and other community service providers are very important, therefore, superior
communication and public relations skills are required; sound understanding of provincial statutes, municipal law and
court procedures; ability to deal effectively with complaint investigation and resolution with good listening, problem
solving and conflict management skills; organizational skills and able to maintain accurate work records; perform duties
effectively with minimum supervision; average computer knowledge and experience. Involves potentially stressful and/or
dangerous working conditions (officer/violator confrontation), driving for long periods of time even during very poor
weather and exposure to dangerous animals.
