The Opportunity

As the Manager, you would be responsible for leading, managing and directing the Economic Development department to support the City of Wetaskiwin’s Vision, Strategic and Corporate Business Plans and its commitment to excellence in municipal government and customer service as well as increasing the total wealth in Wetaskiwin.

Reporting directly to the City Manager, you will be involved in establishing strategic direction and alignment with the organization. You will advise, influence, and inform the City Manager and the Senior Leadership Team of the operations, affairs, and the direction of the department.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Responsibilities:

Provide excellent leadership to the Economic Development department to support the City’s vision and align programs with Council’s Strategic Plan and the Corporate Business Plan.

Provide expertise, guidance, and recommendations to Senior Leadership and Council on the Economic portfolio.

Lead the development and implementation of the City’s Economic Development Strategy and Department Business Plan.

Implement initiatives that support existing businesses through ongoing engagement and information-sharing to encourage them to stay and grow in Wetaskiwin.

Facilitate development and business growth through a targeted approach built.

Evaluate the implications of various commercial, industrial, and other development proposals in the context of the City’s economic development strategies, plans, and policies.

Develop strategies and initiatives to address local labor market issues in coordination with local education providers and post-secondary schools.

Develop marketing programs and related materials to promote the City’s.
- Build strong partnerships with stakeholders and networks across the region and beyond that can be leveraged to help achieve outcomes.
- Prepare confidential and public correspondence, reports, and briefings to be delivered to the City Manager, Senior Leadership, City Council, the public and other stakeholders.
- Oversee a variety of studies and projects including researching, assembling, analyzing, and interpreting data related to economic development.
- Represent the City of Wetaskiwin at conferences and workshops, addresses, and networks with committees, boards, and others to champion the City’s economic development program.

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

University degree in business, public administration, economic development, or a related field.

5+ years experience in a relevant field or a combination of education and experience.

Professional economic development certification preferred.

Extensive knowledge of the principles and administration of economic development, business retention and investment attraction including the political and policy factors that influence department programs and their development.

Knowledge of fiscal management, planning and reporting processes, business planning, and best practices of Economic Development in a public sector setting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:

Strong leadership skills including the ability to collectively create a vision of the future, identify clearly defined goals, influence, persuade, and garner commitment.

Ability to develop and execute strategy, and develop and implement new programs, procedures, services, and policies that address emerging needs and operational priorities.

Strong political and business acumen as well as organizational savvy; the ability to respond under pressure to changing political and operational situations.

Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills.

Excellent presentation and communication skills; a visionary leader with the ability to present and address Council, Boards and Committees.

Ability to work under pressure and manage a variety of projects and initiatives simultaneously.

Ability to liaise and consult with internal and external stakeholders.
