The Ministry of Forestry, Park and Tourism is recruiting for JFR Crew Leaders (9 positions) and Sub Leaders (9 positions)

Junior Forest Rangers (JFR) is an exciting summer work experience program that focuses on stewardship, leadership, and traditional ecological knowledge. The program fosters an appreciation for our natural environment by completing hands-on work projects and being immersed in educational natural resource opportunities, overall promoting team building to establish a positive, inclusive outdoor experience.

Key Responsibilities Include:

JFR Crew Leaders (NR4):

Supervision and direction of a Sub Leader and six crew members;

Developing and implementing safety standards and procedures;

Designing a safe, rewarding work, and educational program schedule by networking and coordinating with professionals;

Organizing evaluations and addressing any situations with staff.

JFR Crew Sub Leaders (NR3):

Assisting in the direction and supervision of all crew members, work projects, recreational outings and general camp situations;

Designing a safe, rewarding work, and educational program schedule by networking and coordinating with professionals;

Projecting and conducting maintenance and inventory inspections of all equipment;

Implementing safety standards and procedures.

Requirements:

JFR Crew Leaders (NR4):

a high school diploma plus one year related training/courses and or six months related experience is required

$24.07 to $29.73 hourly

JFR Crew Sub Leaders (NR3):

a high school diploma plus some related training/courses and six months related experience is required

$23.28 to $28.67 per hour

Salary:

There is an additional 11.2% added to the hourly rate in lieu paid holidays and vacation.

2% of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays

6% of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay

Additional requirements:

Applicants must provide proof of required items before receiving an offer letter. Applicants are able to provide proof of the documents after submitting their application. If you have these items readily available, include a copy of the following with your application:

An unrestricted, Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence, or equivalent

A minimum of Standard First Aid with Level A or C CPR certification

A Defensive Driving Certification (contact JFR staff for online options)

A completed JFR fitness form and Par-Q readiness form

*An Acceptable Drivers Abstract

*A Driver’s Abstract, showing a record of seven (7) demerits or less. Your driver’s abstract must show: your driving record for the past three years, and all violations (moving and non-moving), citations, suspensions, and any driving restrictions placed upon you.

Leaders maintain a state of physical fitness to effectively endure the rigorous working conditions. Fitness testing is a mandatory part of the hiring process. You must include proof of a passed fitness test (JFR Fitness Form) with your application. In order to participate in the 2023 JFR season, all leaders and members must pass a fitness test as part of the application process.

In addition to daily work Monday to Friday, leaders will be compensated for evening and weekend supervision during July and August, as applicable.

Final candidates for this position must clear a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check conducted by their local police department. In order to participate in the 2023 JFR season, all leaders and members must pass a fitness test as part of the application process.
