We're looking for an Investment Attraction Officer who will ultimately own and direct activities that spur greenfield and brownfield development across the county’s numerous development districts. This position will focus on targeting new significant (foreign and domestic) investments into Sturgeon County and be a subject matter and business development expert in residential, commercial, and industrial real estate development. This position will execute business development activities, conduct economic analysis, support investor incentive program(s), engage partner networks (including forums for real estate professionals, developers and investors), provide professional responses to investment inquiries and respond to requests from national, provincial, and regional partner organizations.
Under the direction of theManager of Economic Development Services and reporting to the Sr. Investment Attraction Lead: develop, maintain, and execute the investment attraction plan for the development and build-out of Sturgeon Valley.
Reporting to the Sr. Investment Attraction Lead, develop, maintain, and execute the investment attraction plan and aid in investment attraction efforts of the department related to target industries, investment opportunities, residential, commercial and industrial development areas.
Focus investment attraction effort on residential, commercial (retail, highway commercial, service commercial and others), value-added agriculture (ingredient, additive and finished consumer goods production), advanced manufacturing; transportation, warehousing and logistics, value-added energy (including energy transition opportunities); aviation, aerospace and defense development opportunities.
Relay items important for the continued competitiveness of Sturgeon County (infrastructure deficits, process improvements, regulatory right sizing, departmental workflows) for a streamlined concierge approach to investor engagement.
Generate new investment leads, identify, and contact decision-makers, screen potential business opportunities and select the most actionable opportunities in line with the departmental and corporate strategies of Sturgeon County.
Represent Sturgeon County at regional, national, and potentially international forums and within business audiences related to target sector and key development area growth opportunities.
Coordinate county, site and building tours within the municipality and surrounding area for prospective investors and stakeholders
Ensure prompt response to requests (both formal and informal) from new investment leads to the county from potential investor companies, regional stakeholders, site selectors,federal and provincial government contacts, etc.
Serve as a point of contact to facilitate development permit process between investors and the development authority by enabling and encouraging information exchange.
Create, coordinate, and deliver site selection packages and information, presentations, reporting, regular updates on activities (CRM use), website updates and speaking notes.
Support investment attraction incentive program development, processing, execution, adjustment, and amendment.
Business Retention and Expansion (10%)
Assist with plans and activities related to department objectives for investment attraction in Sturgeon Valley, and the county’s industrial districts.
Engage with Business Retention and Expansion hand off and aftercare activities of Sturgeon County – ensuring a high level of service for newly invested companies.
Support newly invested companies with information related to Business Retention and Expansion activities (supply chain forums, webinars, networking programming/events).
Partnership and Interconnection (10%)
Build and maintain relationships with internal staff and departments at Sturgeon County. Strong interdepartmental and interdivisional connection and collaboration is required.
Work with regional partners and build networks that leverage the activities of the department while providing a high level of service to the existing business community.
Utilize and expand professional networks to maintain and build new relationships within the residential, commercial, and industrial real estate development and leasing community including developers, brokers, financers, and others.
Recommend and/or coordinate updates todepartment maps, websites, social mediaand campaigns as needed.
Inform on the creation and maintenance of marketing collateral and materials.
Recommend and support the development of marketing plans or campaigns that aim to achieve the goals and targets set within the Department.
Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
5+ years' experience in economic development, business development, sales and marketing, consulting or related field.
Bachelor’s-level degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field such as business, commerce or marketing.
Experience with CRM Software is essential (Microsoft Dynamics 365 preferred).
Proven track record in collaborating within cross functional teams.
Experience developing strategic and tactical business development plans to support the strategy of an organization.
Innovative and solution-oriented mindset with strong analytical skills, and political savvy.
Strong work ethic, self-motivated and able to work in a team setting or independently. Must have strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
Former experience or knowledge in the commercial real estate industry would be considered a strong asset.
The individual must be able to work independently, and in a team setting, while interacting with the existing business community, potential investors, community organizations, regional municipalities and other orders of government.
This position must work with other county departments and external stakeholders, community organizations, businesses, and other municipalities.
The individual must possess project management skills, advanced written and verbal communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
The individual must understand economic development best practices, have a strong knowledge of emerging business trends and issues and the ability to collect and interpret data from a variety of sources.
The individual should have experience, knowledge and an existing network in commercial, industrial and residential real estate development communities.
Working after normal business hours, and business travel both within the region and beyond, is often required. Individuals must be able to meet and exceed deadlines in a fast-paced and evolving work environment.
Ability to engage with various audiences including department staff, interdivisional teams, senior management and Council.
