Horticultural Technician

This position is responsible for coordinating and implementing the County’s horticultural programs including responding to resident inquiries and directing and overseeing the daily activities of the Landscape Labourer ll to ensure County-owned facilities and County sign sites are maintained to a high aesthetic standard.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Investigate all types of horticultural matters including inquiries or complaints regarding tree and garden pests, maintenance/pruning and environmental conditions.

Effectively communicate with residents and provide recommendations and/or referrals to appropriate professional service providers.

Use GIS-based system to track and monitor all customer inquiries.

Monitor horticultural trends and prepare education and communication materials to assist residents in proactive management of emerging issues.

Plan, develop and maintain plantings and landscape features at County-owned facilities and sign sites.

Safely operate various types of equipment including riding and push mowers, weed trimmers, chainsaws and pruning tools.

Provide daily direction and oversight to the Landscape Labourer ll position to deliver horticultural programs.

Conduct inspections of development projects to ensure compliance with Sturgeon County’s General Municipal Servicing Standards.

Assist in the delivery of rural extension programs and events including the Sturgeon County Tree Program.

Complete other related duties as directed by the Supervisor.

Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System and the Corporate Records Management System.

Assist in monitoring of public and private properties to ensure compliance with the Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act and Sturgeon County Community Standards Bylaw 1433/19.

Requirements:

Post-secondary education in horticulture, arboriculture, landscaping or a related discipline.

2 years or more experience in a horticultural role. Supervisory experience is considered an asset.

Landscape Pesticide Applicator certification or Authorized Assistant certification (or the ability to obtain).

Class 5 Driver’s License with an acceptable Driver’s Abstract.

Standard First Aid certificate or the ability to obtain prior to start date.

Defensive Driving certificate or the ability to obtain prior to start date.

Ability to conduct strenuous work for extended time periods and perform medium lifting of 25 kilograms.

Ability to wear a half mask with organic carbon filters when handling herbicides, and completion of a Respiratory User Screening Form as per the CSA Z94.4-11.

Experience in cargo securement, hooking up trailers and towing is considered an asset.

Experience driving a pickup on gravel roads is considered an asset.

Strong verbal, written communication, and customer service skills.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment and ability to work independently.

Familiarity with the Alberta Township Survey (ATS) System and rural addressing systems.

Strong problem-solving skills.

Knowledge of horticultural practices.

Mechanical knowledge and aptitude to repair and maintain small engines and other implements.

Hours of Work:

April 12 – May 14, 2021, Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

May 17 – October 1, 2021, Monday-Friday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm (These hours may be subject to change).
