GIS Assistant

The GIS Assistant is a junior role that supports the GIS Department with processing, tracking, and recording requests for services. The GIS Assistant provides support to the County’s operations in the collection, creation, and maintenance of both spatial and non-spatial data records.

An understanding of digitizing, scanning, and printing equipment, GPS devices, and mobile App systems for field data collection is required along with working knowledge of producing CAD drawings from other engineering drawings, rough sketches, or markups. Creation of orthoimage products, script development using Python, and SQL, with an understanding of Excel would be assets in this role.

Salary range: $50,000-$60,000 per annum commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities Include:

The successful candidate will provide general mapping services, supporting the County’s Infrastructure, Planning and Development operations, and other departments as required.

Requirements:

Working closely with staff and customers, the individual will primarily be expected to possess the following:

Proficient cartographic skills with GIS Software (Esri ArcGIS, QGIS) including data modelling, Mobile Apps - Survey123, Collector, FieldMaps, etc.

Working knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software, preferably AutoCAD

Working knowledge of data manipulation with Microsoft Excel, Access, – 2010, and above

Working knowledge of Remote Sensing, Image Analysis, Air Photo Orthorectification

Working knowledge of Topographic and Hydrological Mapping (preferred)

Strong data management skills preferably using SQL and Python for creating or updating scripts for developing automated workflows

Knowledge of GIS principles, standards, techniques, and procedures

Highly self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail

Excellent communication skills and experience providing excellent customer service

Time management/multi-tasking and the ability to work in a team oriented, collaborative environment

Alberta driver’s license in good standing and access to a reliable vehicle for commuting

Legally qualified to work in Canada

The successful candidate must have more than four (4) months of extensive ArcGIS or AutoCAD drafting experience working on drawings or maps of a municipal, civil, planning, development, survey, or GIS nature (i.e.: plans of subdivisions, roads, sewers, properties, site services, mapping, or similar).

Education – any one of the following:

Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Geography, Engineering, or a related field of study (Advanced Operations RPAS UAV pilot licence preferred but not mandatory).

Professional Certification in Engineering Technology (OACETT) or GIS (GISCI) training or experience in Geomatics Engineering Technology.

Training or experience working with LiDAR or 3D orthophoto mapping.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

Prior experience working in a Municipal Planning, Development or Infrastructure role

Experience working with Air Photos

Experience with GPS and the development of data capture methods and techniques using mobile technology such as Collector, Survey123, FieldMaps, etc.
