Summary

The Position

The County of Wetaskiwin No. 10 is seeking to employ one (1) full-time permanent Equipment Operator based out of either the Wetaskiwin Shop or Winfield Shop primarily focused on a recently approved “Gravel Network Enhanced Road Improvement Program”.   This position will primarily involve road building including but not limited to shoulder pulling, re-compacting and re-shaping of roads. The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of road building and will be required to act as a Lead Hand to organize day-to-day operations depending on the project. The position will also act as a relief/supplementary operator for various patrol maintenance coverage (winter and summer operations), and have other duties as assigned including but not limited to hand-brushing and sign maintenance. Hours of work are typically Monday to Friday, with a 10-hour workday commencing at 7:00 a.m., or as required.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Road Maintenance Foreman, the successful candidate will be required to perform road maintenance and construction work activities involving the operation of various forms of construction equipment that may include motor graders, crawler dozers, compaction rollers, loaders, excavators, skid steers and backhoes.  Preference will be given to individuals that can operate multiple pieces of construction equipment.   This is a moderately physically demanding position, and the candidate will need to be physically fit in order to undertake various activities that include lifting and strenuous work at times.

Qualifications

  • Be able to work independently with minimum supervision and have experience organizing and leading projects consisting of various crew members.
  • Be physically fit to meet the demands of operating various tools and equipment and working outdoors in extreme conditions.
  • Demonstrate an excellent aptitude for equipment maintenance and care.
  • Experience in road building, road repairs, road materials and operating motor graders and other various heavy equipment as required.
  • Participate and actively promote the County’s safe work practices and procedures and commit to delivering quality workmanship and efficiencies.
  • Valid Class 1 license and experience hauling equipment is considered an asset and preferred.
