The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting to fill three Seasonal (6-month) Environmental Utilities Labourer (Construction & Maintenance) positions. These positions are responsible to perform various labouring duties in the Class IV Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection and Stormwater Collection utilities. Operate tools and small to medium motorized construction equipment and vehicles.

As our preferred candidate you will have:
Grade 12 or equivalent
One year experience in underground deep utility construction of water and wastewater systems preferred.
Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Level 1 Alberta Provincial Certification in Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection preferred.
Must pass and maintain Hazard Assessment, Supervisory Ground Disturbance, WHMIS, First Aid, H2S, Confined Space and Rescue, Driver Training and other courses as determined by the City or Provincial requirements.
Ability to achieve 7.2 (approximately 72 hours) continuing educations credits per three-year cycle.
Valid Class 3 Driver's License with Q Endorsement.
Demonstrated safety skills in the use of specialized equipment including, but not limited to, respirators and supplied air, air quality monitors, and confined space entry equipment.
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to use a wide range of construction tools and portable water testing equipment.
Ability to safely operate assigned equipment with a high level of skill in an urban environment, often with limited operating space and significant underground and overhead utilities, while near people, traffic and site obstructions.
Able to read and interpret utility plans.
Ability to work unsupervised and cooperate with colleagues as a team and to follow and understand written and verbal instructions.
Knowledge of operating characteristics, functions and capabilities of all available tools and equipment, and its required inspection and maintenance.
This position will require the incumbent to work in hazardous and disagreeable work environments (i.e.: biohazards, noisy, wet, dirty, excavations, buried and aerial utilities, confined spaces, traffic, heavy equipment and in all types of weather). Ability to climb into, and work within, cabs of equipment and other areas for maintenance and be subject to continuous body movement, vibrations and sudden jolts. Hazards may be through entering properties and dealing with difficult customers. Specific regulations may also be adhered to if requested by the property owner/developer.
Must be physically fit to exert heavy physical effort consistently throughout each day lifting and carrying heavy appurtenances, shovelling, bend and twist in awkward positions, opening and closing valves, climbing ladders, and working at heights with considerable standing, bending and walking.
Respond to after hour emergencies and work extended shifts.
