Director of Public Works (Full-Time)
Lamont County is located less than 45 minutes east of Edmonton and is part of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Lamont County has an opening for an experienced Director of Public Works on a full-time permanent basis. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Director of Public Works is responsible for the overall management of roads, utilities and drainage infrastructure operations, the Public Works Shop, Public Works Administration, inventory and asset management.
Working with the CAO and Senior Administration Team, this position applies technical expertise and establishes best practices in managing Public Works operations. This position develops and executes departmental operating plans, implements programs, provides leadership and guidance to staff, and is responsible for responding to and solving complex operational issues.

- Ensures compliance with Occupational Health and Safety.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures programs, policies, bylaws, and Council goals and objectives pertaining to the Public Works Department are observed and carried out as intended.
- Organizes personnel and assigns tasks effectively to achieve Department goals.
- Ensure that all capital and maintenance projects are undertaken in a manner following standard construction and engineering principles.
- Oversees professional engineers and contractors in the implementation of County projects and departmental operations.
- Oversees and implements asset management for Public Works through programs, systems, and ensuring sustainability through policy and directives.
- Responsible for the preparation of tenders or contracts in consultation with the CAO.
- Prepares, monitors and reports on the Public Works capital and operating budgets and programs in consultation with the CAO and Chief Financial Officer.
- Responds to inquiries and complaints from the Public regarding Public Works concerns in a professional and efficient manner. Manages the completion of Service Requests on a priority basis.
- Oversees fleet maintenance, annual County Road construction and bridge inspection programs, water distribution systems, and drainage maintenance.
- Participates and presents in weekly director meetings, monthly Council meetings, and other scheduled meetings as required.
- May be required to respond to emergency situations.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Post-secondary education in Public Administration, Business or Engineering or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered
- A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a leadership role in a municipal public works environment, preferably in a rural setting.
- Experience directly working with the maintenance and implementation of road development, capital and operational budgeting, asset management, and infrastructure improvement plans.
- Demonstrated knowledge of related Municipal Legislation, Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Legislation, and Alberta Environmental regulations.
- Thorough knowledge of principles and practices in budget development, implementation, and administration.
- Demonstrated leadership in developing a team, including coaching and mentoring staff, providing direction and ongoing feedback.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Valid class 5 Alberta Driver’s License.
- A satisfactory and valid Driver’s Abstract.
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
This position is based on a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
