As a member of the County's Senior Executive Team, the Director of Community Services supports the Chief Administrative Officer and ensures the Council's long-term goals are achieved. As the Director, you would be responsible for providing strategic leadership, management, and direction to Community Services to support the County of Grande Prairie's Vision, and Strategic and Corporate Business Plans.
Community Services is one of the larger service areas within the County. It has several departments including:
Regional Fire Services
Regional Enforcement Services
Parks & Recreation
Family and Community Support Services (FCSS)
This position will oversee up to 310 full-time and seasonal staff with an overall budget responsibility of ~$29M.

Key Responsibilities Include:
Provides effective leadership and direction in the development of short and long-range plans; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports, and recommendations; coordinates department activities with other departments, and agencies as needed.
Plans and organizes workloads and assignments. Coaches and mentors staff to use strategic thinking skills, build effective working relationships and collaborative approaches. Trains, motivates, and evaluates staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed.
Makes recommendations to the Chief Administrative Officer and Council to assist in decision-making.
Reviews programs and procedures to ensure they are current, relevant, and in compliance with established County policies.
Attends department, community group, public and Municipal Council meetings and hearings
Participates as a member of the senior management team.
Develops and monitors the operating budget for Community Services
Oversees the Agriculture, FCSS, Fire Service, Regional Enforcement Services, and Parks & Recreation departments including the Executive Assistant and front-desk operations at the Community Services Building, supporting the development and monitoring of operating and capital budgets in coordination with the managers and directly supervising the managers.
Emergency and Disaster Services
Acts as the Director of Emergency Management (DEM) for the County of Grande Prairie.
Participates in GPREP (Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership); liaises and consults with the GPREP Coordinator on emergency plans, training, and grants.
Liaises with Emergency Management Partners and other emergency services organizations including local/provincial/federal officials regarding emergency plans.
Education & Experience
University degree in a related field
Minimum 5 to 8 years' experience in one or more related disciplines including supervisory experience at a senior level
Local Government Certificate or equivalent (preferred)
Experience in a municipal or public sector setting is considered an asset
Experience in preparing long range plans and budgets
Proven ability to work with elected officials and presenting to a council.
Ability to establish, develop and maintain existing community-based partnerships within County
Demonstrated ability to effectively build partnerships with other municipalities, and regional partnerships
Effective management and budgeting skills
Working knowledge of the services and programs in Community Services
