Lead the next level of Community Safety! The Director of Community Safety is responsible for managing the Whitecourt Fire Department, Law Enforcement, Occupational Health and Safety, and Community Emergency Management Program; and provides strategic leadership in the development and coordination of community safety initiatives for our rapidly growing municipality. Key Responsibilities Include:

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), you will:

Provide senior leadership to the Department in support of the community’s vision, Council’s strategic direction, corporate priorities, and financial and governing legislation.

Generate shared ownership, vision and action among stakeholders, community organizations and government to improve community safety and resident/employee sense of safety.

Work with senior leadership to provide common direction and integrated service delivery in support of community safety priorities and client departments, based on Town policy.

Provide recommendations to the Chief Administrative Officer for the establishment of strategic objectives, policies, and programs for the delivery of community safety services and programs.

Ensure effective, and equitable management and stewardship of financial resources (capital and annual budgets), and assets allocated to the Community Safety Department in collaboration with the Director’s direct reports.

Be responsible for the outcomes and activities of the Whitecourt Fire Department, Law Enforcement (including the Bylaw/Peace Officer Program), Occupational Health and Safety Program, and Community Emergency Management Program.

Continue to develop, refine, and enhance the Town’s Occupational Health and Safety Program to meet the organizational safety requirements.

Be appointed as, and responsible for, the duties of the Director of Emergency Management under the Community Emergency Management Plan.

Act as the Town liaison with RCMP.

Participate as a member of the Town’s Senior Management Team; providing input and direction towards the achievement of the Town’s overall goals.

Requirements:

The strategic leadership of the Director is vital to the development and coordination of community safety for our community. The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

Post-secondary education (i.e. Business Administration, Political Science, certificate in Local Government Administration, or equivalent) supplemented with extensive private sector or public sector management and leadership experience.

A CLGM designation and/or enrollment or completion of the National Advanced Certificate in Local Authority Administration (NACLAA) program is desired.

Five years of administrative leadership experience at a senior level.

Disaster & Emergency Management and Occupational Health & Safety Certificates are an asset. These will be required once hired.

Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas, project, and process concepts, both orally and in writing, with ease and clarity.

Ability to effectively build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders (vendors, citizens, other orders of government, and business community).

Proven leadership and strategic planning ability with demonstrated understanding and effectiveness in managing and optimizing a professional team.

Compensation

The Town of Whitecourt offers a progressive working environment, comprehensive benefits and pension plans.

The salary range for this position is currently $130,740 to $159,070 per year.

The successful applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment physical and criminal record check, and provide a clean driver’s abstract, prior to being hired.
