This posting is for 1 Seasonal, Hourly, Full-time position for up to 4 months (August to November)
This position will be responsible for surveying, sampling and inspecting agricultural crops in Strathcona County for diseases and pests listed on the Alberta Agricultural Pests Act, Pest and Nuisance Control Regulations and as required by Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development. This position will also assist in soil conservation inspections, as per the Alberta Soils Conservations Act.
Complete clubroot inspections within the parameters of the Agricultural Pests Act and Strathcona County’s policies and procedures by surveying, inspecting and sampling canola crops within the County and recording locations on GIS software
Record GPS locations of clubroot infected plants and calculate clubroot incidence and severity levels
Complete and submit crop and pest sampling for Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development surveys by collecting grasshopper, wheat and canola samples for provincial disease monitoring
Communicate with farmers and landowners on proper management practices and biosecurity options to prevent the spread of diseases and pests
Assist Soil Conservation Officer with soil conservation inspections
Skills and Abilities
Ability to identify agricultural crops, pests, plant diseases and invasive species
Effective customer service, public relations and communications skills to work with diverse groups of individuals and the capacity to de-escalate challenging situations
Highly organized with keen attention to detail
Experience with data input, data analysis and report writing
Ability to work self-sufficiently in field conditions that include inclement weather and remote rural areas
General computer proficiency and a background in GIS is considered an asset
Attending or completed post-secondary education with an emphasis on Agriculture or Biological Sciences (crop/plant science, botany, soil science or ecology) and 2 years related farming or agriculture experience
Knowledge and understanding of the Alberta Agricultural Pests Act, Alberta Soils Conservation Act, and Strathcona County’s policies and procedures
Understanding of current farming practices and familiarity with farm and industrial equipment is considered an asset
Current First Aid is an asset
Conditions of Employment
Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
Flexibility to work extended hours, evenings and/or weekends as required
