The City is looking for a Communications Assistant to develop and support the effective delivery of information to City employees as part of its internal corporate communications efforts. This position will support our strategic goal of promoting a healthy corporate culture by leading internal communications efforts throughout the organization while ensuring alignment with the Corporate Business Plan and Wetaskiwin’s Fifty-Year Community Vision.
Reporting to the Manager of Communications, this position will positively contribute to building a strong and connected organizational culture which is instrumental to achieve business goals and retaining qualified and motivated employees. This position will work closely with the Human Resource department, City Administration, and various teams within the organization to plan, support and execute internally focused information, engagement initiatives, and projects.

Responding to communication requests from internal departments.
Proactively working with internal departments to plan out public engagement activities in alignment with City policy.
Provide proactive issues management through the identification of emerging internal issues that could impact the City’s corporate culture.
Responsible for helping implement the results of Wetaskiwin’s Fifty-Year Community Vision internally by developing an annual, internally focused communications plan to ensure the Community Vision remains front of mind for City employees.
Responsible for managing the City Employee Portal and ensuring a fresh rotation of content designed to positively impact the City’s corporate culture.
Assist with externally focused communications activities from time to time, at the direction of the Communications Manager.
Implement the City’s corporate visual identity/brand standards and monitors communication materials to ensure appropriate interpretation and consistency.
Assist with ensuring the municipal website remains updated by connecting with internal stakeholders and assisting them in developing content for the web in accordance with website standards.
Adhere to guidelines as set out in the Human Resource Administrative Procedures.
Participate in the City Health and Safety programs and policies as required.
Education and Work Experience
A diploma/degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, visual design, or related field is required.
Previous experience in a communications position is considered an asset.
Any work experience in the communications, marketing, public relations, or journalism sectors would be a considerable asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and active listening skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a requirement.
Proficient experience with and use of relevant software (such as Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Illustrator, and Microsoft Office) is an asset.
Ability to fill in for the Communications Manager and/or other Communications Assistant for short periods as necessary.
Membership with a professional society, such as CPRS or IABC, is considered an asset.
A good understanding and knowledge of the City of Wetaskiwin and relevant issues is considered an asset.
The ideal candidate is highly motivated, enthusiastic, and possesses a positive, can-do attitude.
Must enjoy working in a collaborative, fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment and possess the necessary skills to collaborate and work as part of a team as well as on their own.
Must be flexible and be able to prioritize multiple projects in an ever-changing environment.
Successful candidates will need to be double vaccinated or provide a negative rapid COVID19 test result. The City is providing testing kits at this time, however this is based on supply. If testing kits cannot be procured, unvaccinated employees will be responsible to get rapid tested on their own time and at their own expense.
