Casual Public Operations Positions

Have you always wanted to make a difference in the community? Do you have experience working on roads, construction or in agriculture? Lethbridge County is accepting applications for the 2021 season. Positions may be available in Public Works or Agriculture Services departments, working out of our Picture Butte Shop. We are looking for skilled people that will be available to start as early as April for full time seasonal work hours through August or October, depending on the position.

The number of vacancies will depend on the response to our seasonal call back.

2021 Casual Public Works/ Agriculture Services Positions

Department: Public Works/ Agriculture Services
Pay Class: 2021 CUPE Contract Class 1 – 3 ranging between $18.55-$29.22/ hour depending on position and qualifications.
Reports To: Department Supervisor or Lead Hands

Key Responsibilities Include:

Work on the construction, gravelling projects and base stabilization crews assisting with equipment operations, servicing and other duties as assigned.

Perform manual labour and assist on various County projects.

Operate various equipment as trained and required.

Work in our Agriculture Department involves: mowing, park maintenance and sprinkler repair, operating weed sprayers (3/4-ton truck, ATV, backpack), operating the 3-ton spray boom truck tractors or additional equipment that includes but is not limited to: tractors, 15-foot pull-type mowers, 3pt. type equipment such as seeders.

Operate equipment that includes, but is not limited to: power tools, weed whips, ATVs and hand tools.

Traffic control and flagging duties for construction or worksites.

Conduct daily inspections and provide basic daily maintenance and servicing of equipment.

Provide accurate record keeping on daily records, reports and timesheets.

Active participation in Lethbridge County’s Health and Safety program.

Various other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

This position will work 9-hour days Monday through Thursday (7am-4:30pm) and 8 hours on Friday (7am-3:30pm) out of the Picture Butte Shop. Positions may be subject to overtime in order to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner.

Requirements:

Must have a minimum Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing. A Class 3 Driver’s License with Q or Class 1 may be required depending on positions available. Please provide a 5-year driver’s abstract to ensure compliance with County Policy.

Minimum grade 12 High School Education or GED (General Education Diploma) or equivalent.

Must have experience and knowledge in the operation of various light equipment including hand and power tools.

For Public Works - preference will be given to candidates with experience in road or general construction, gravelling, oiling, patching, bridge repair and dust control programs as well as other various projects within the department.

For Agriculture Services - preference will be given to candidates with experience operating tractors, mowers and other related farm equipment. Experience with maintenance and repairs would be an asset. These positions can be a great fit for students or semi-retired farmers.

Previous experience in equipment operation through farming or construction.

Candidate must be physically fit, work independently and be a self-starter.

Flagging and additional safety training would be an asset.

Able to establish and maintain a good working relationship with other staff members, supervisors and the general public.

Able to recognize, rectify and/or report upon actual or potential safety hazards.

A satisfactory criminal record check is required for all County positions.
