Job Duties:
The following duties are typical for the Operator position. Incumbents may not perform all the duties listed and/or may be required to perform additional duties from those set forth below to address operational needs and evolving best practice.
Additional duties that Operators may be required to perform include all duties identified in the Labourer job description. Working independently or with a team; waste and garbage collecting, signage and wayfinding and an assortment of support duties related to the maintenance of the County’s roads (paved or gravel) and assets (bridges, drainage ditches and signs) plus other tasks as needed.

- Paved Roads
- Perform surface sealing
- Grader patching
- Oil road maintenance
- Sanding (seasonal)
- Gravel Roads
- Maintain road crown
- Snow clearing and removal (seasonal)
- Drainage Improvement
- Culvert replacement and disposal
- Roadside ditch and drainage course excavation
- Beaver dam removal
Operator lll
In addition to the above duties, incumbents in the Operator lll position are responsible for the following duties:
- Operation of the following equipment:
- Tractor trailer (semi-truck)
- Excavator
- Loader backhoe
All Operator Levels:
- Required to interact with County employees, citizens, contractors in an appropriate manner as guided by Sturgeon County Values.
- Adhere to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
Job Skills:
Must work effectively and efficiently with others and alone with little or no supervision, always be punctual, communicate openly, take direction well, and respond to public inquiries in a calm and friendly manner.
The ability to safely operate various small power tools by taking precautions to avoid incident. Knowledge of servicing the equipment assigned would be an asset. Work is performed at various outdoor work sites within the County.
Demonstrate a high level of work performance and initiative. Capable of and may be expected to operate several pieces of heavy duty equipment. Exhibit initiative and good judgment in loading, hauling and unloading all types and sizes of materials, supplies, machines and equipment. Knowledge of approval methods of transporting, including loading, unloading, towing and winching operations. Possess skills and abilities to assume higher level supervision. Exhibit initiative and responsibility as well as an understanding of the capabilities of the machine being operated. Knowledge, skill and ability to operate equipment safely and be able to avoid accidents. Exhibit the knowledge and ability in the maintenance and servicing of the equipment or vehicle. Ability to tarp and tie down loads when required. Work is performed at various outdoor work sites within the county.
