Brazeau County has an immediate opening for an Assistant Agricultural Fieldman! We’re looking for an experienced individual that is highly motivated to meet the service delivery needs of our Agricultural Services department. The Assistant Agricultural Fieldman is responsible for assisting in the implementation of the Agricultural Services department’s programming and operational activities.
Key Responsibilities Include:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general direction of the Manager of Agricultural Services, the Assistant Agricultural Fieldman performs the following duties:
- As a Council appointed inspector, assists the Manager of Agricultural Services in the administration and enforcement of the Alberta Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, and Soil Conservation Act.
- Provides operational and program support in accordance with Agricultural Service Board (ASB) and Council approved policy, Provincial and Federal legislation, and internal procedures.
- Respond to inquiries and requests from multiple stakeholders.
- Assist in preparing and presenting agenda items for ASB meetings, and occasionally Council.
- Planning workshops, seminars, and other events on behalf of the Agricultural Services Department.
- Assist in the preparation of the weed inspection and vegetation management budgets.
- Develop, maintain, and manage relationships with internal and external partners.
- Operational duties:
- Trains and supervises temporary summer staff.
- Coordinates and occasionally performs pesticide application and site evaluation.
- Ensures all applicable legislation and best practises are understood and implemented in Brazeau County’s pesticide application program.
- Organizes roadside seeding program.
- Manages daily tasks of weed inspectors and pesticide applicators.
- Ensures Brazeau County safety program and procedures are adhered to.
- Administrative:
- Provides occasional administrative support to the Manager of Agricultural Services.
- Registering ASB board members for events and conferences (including booking hotels).
- ASB meetings:
- Prepare and distribute agenda packages
- ALUS meetings:
- Record meeting minutes and submit to the ALUS Coordinator.
- Records management
- Programming:
- Agricultural equipment rental program.
- Soil, seed, and feed samples.
- Pitch In program.
- County haying and grazing leases.
- No Spray program.
- Herbicide Rebate program.
- Hawkweed program.
- To undertake any other reasonable duty, commensurate with the classification and responsibility of the position, across the department to meet service priorities and business continuity requirements.
- May be required in the event of a municipal emergency to support the emergency operations centre and incident action/recovery plan.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Training:
- Degree or Diploma in Agriculture or Environmental Sciences is desired.
- A combination of education and equivalent experience will be considered.
Licenses/Certifications/Designation:
- Valid Alberta Pesticide Applicators License: Agriculture, Industrial, and Landscape classes preferred.
- Valid Class 5 Driver License.
- Satisfactory Five-Year Commercial Driver’s Abstract is required.
Experiences/Knowledge/Skills:
- Minimum three years related work experience is desired, municipal experience is an asset.
- Supervisory experience is required.
- Knowledge of agriculture and agricultural best practices.
- Possess strong written communication skills with accuracy and detail oriented.
- Effective oral communication skills and ability to interact with many different individuals in a professional manner.
- Time-management skills and the ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks within deadlines.
- Self-motivated, strong work ethic and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of legal land descriptions and map interpretation.
- Advanced knowledge and proficiency in Office 365 including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
- Be willing to obtain further training and education related to agricultural services.

- Work schedule is five days per week, Monday to Friday
- Hours of work are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with a one-hour lunch break. Hours may be modified during summer season.
- Flex days are earned time off, one paid day off every third week.
