Lac Ste. Anne County is seeking a qualified Agronomics Supervisor to join the Agricultural Services Department. Under the direction of the Agricultural Services Manager, this position is responsible for overseeing the County’s Weed Inspection Program, crop pest and disease surveillance, administration of Provincial Acts relating to agriculture, and agricultural extension and outreach programming. This position is also responsible for the supervision of the County’s Weed, Pest, and Crop Inspectors.

Hours of Work: Regular hours Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm, based on 35 hours per week; flexibility of hours required due to overtime requirements, attendance at meetings, Association (AAAF) duties, and other County activities.

Key Responsibilities Include:
Supervising, implementing, and enforcing the County’s Weed Inspection Program and Clubroot Inspection Program.
Supervising and implementing a Grasshopper survey program, as well as alternate agricultural weed, pest, and disease surveys/programs, as directed by the Province, Agriculture Services Manager, senior Administration, and/or County Council.
Managing the biological control program for noxious and prohibited noxious weeds on municipal lands.
Organizing, implementing, and promoting extension and outreach programming related to agriculture, including workshops, tours, field days, open houses, and information sessions.
Assisting in the creation and maintenance of County documents, including budgets, agreements, inventories, and grant claims, as they relate to the Agricultural Services Department.
Responsible for the inspection of all private seed cleaning facilities within the municipality.
Assisting in the identification of plants, insects, and disease related to agriculture.
Making farm calls and receiving members of the public at the office.
Promoting and maintaining a positive working relationship with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Lac Ste. Anne County Council, Lac Ste. Anne County Agriculture Service Board, and the ratepayers within Lac Ste. Anne County.
Providing County Council and the Agricultural Service Board with updates on programs, services, and equipment.
Post-secondary education in a related field (Agriculture, Environmental Sciences) is required. Significant experience in a similar position may be considered for otherwise qualified candidates. An agricultural background is considered an asset.
Considerable knowledge of weeds, crop disease, and crop pests with the ability to identify, as required.
A working knowledge of basic Cartography, Geographical Positioning Systems (GPS) & Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Must possess and maintain a valid Alberta Operator’s License.
Must possess and maintain a current Alberta Pesticide Applicators License or have the ability to obtain.
Must be a member in good standing with the Association of Alberta Agricultural Fieldman or have the ability to qualify for membership.
Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to create and sustain professional relationships.
Attention to detail, solid problem-solving, and advanced analytical skills are required.
Strong initiative and leadership qualities.
