Who We’re Looking For

The County of St. Paul is looking for a full-time Agriculture and Waste Supervisor based in our Public Works Shop.

The Supervisor implements Agricultural Services Board (ASB) programs and services as well as provides operational direction in areas of waste management and recycling. This is a safety-sensitive position, guiding full-time and seasonal ASB and waste management staff to manage County programs efficiently, effectively, and safely.

Working hours

Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Benefits & Compensation

The County of St. Paul offers comprehensive compensation and benefits, with benefits beginning after one month of employment. Employees contribute to the Local Authorities Pension Plan, building towards their future retirement.

All employees receive 10 vacation days pro-rated to their start date, which increases to 3 weeks in the following year.

Key Responsibilities

What does this role look like?

Agricultural Service Board

  • Implement programs and services around the Agricultural Service Board Act, Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pest Act, Soil Conservation Act, and the Animal Health Act.
  • Ensure resources for the identification, monitoring, and control of weed, pest, insect, and disease control programs for the County.
  • Play an active role in the ASB, including agenda preparation and meetings.
  • Manage the County’s coyote/wolf bounty programs and Beaver Reduction Program.
  • Enforce the Dogs at Large Bylaw for the County.
  • Ensure the safe and effective delivery of the ASB Equipment Rental Program.

Waste Management

  • Ensure adherence with various Provincial waste and recycling legislation, regulations, programs, codes of practice, and approvals.
  • Ensure that Transfer Stations and Class III landfills are operating in accordance with Provincial regulations and Evergreen Landfill’s approvals.
  • Coordinate staffing at transfer stations and address attendant concerns.
  • Coordinate maintenance of transfer stations and public bin sites, including snow removal, spraying and mowing, removal of illegal waste and fugitive litter.
  • Oversee station site security, assisting in incident investigation and reporting.

Requirements

What does this role need?

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in agriculture, biology, environmental technology, or business administration.
  • 5-7 years of progressively responsible and related experience in an agriculture services and/or waste management department.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta’s driver’s license.
  • Form 7 Certification.
  • Transfer Station Basics Certificate.
  • Landfill Basics Certificate.
  • Handling of Household Hazards Waste Certificate.
  • Certificates in any of the following: weed identification, pesticide application (agricultural/industrial), pest control, beaver control, stray dog or animal control.
  • Effective leadership, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills that allow for clear communication of complex matters.

An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
