Summary

Working with the CAO to provide seamless program delivery. Managing established programs as well as tours and extension opportunities, will form the basis of this position. This position will be designated as an Agricultural Fieldman and as such a Designated Officer for the Municipality under the Agricultural Service Board Act.

Key Responsibilities

1. Responsible for supervising the employees of the department with respect to related agricultural functions and responsibilities, and position related contracts.
2. Responsible for interviewing, hiring and directing employees including scheduling work hours and approving overtime for positions supervised to best meet workload and deadlines.
3. Responsible to perform annual employee evaluations.
4. Responsible to provide support to the CAO by:
• Developing the annual department budget
• Developing workshops, including the preparation and delivery of presentations
• Creating newsletters, brochures, notices of upcoming events
• Developing and implementing the Weed Control Program
• Enforcement of the Agricultural Service Board Act, Weed Control Act, Soil
Conservation Act and the Agricultural Pests Act of Alberta

• Co-ordinate office and ASB shop supply ordering
• Maintaining and updating information to the Communication Coordinator of the Ag
portion of County website
• Explain County policies and procedures with regards to the Ag Services department
• Monitoring Contractors (Mowers etc…)
5. Provide supervision and support to department Staff (Weed Inspection, Vegetation Management, Mowers) by:
• Provide field support related to the various Acts and programs as required
• Assist in maintaining the records management as needed, as well as maintaining Ag filing system
6. The Coordinator will be responsible for Policy development to support Councils Strategic
planning, the ASB Strategic Plan or other plans pertaining to Agricultural Services.
7. Other related duties as assigned by CAO

Requirements

  1. Agricultural background, education or membership with Alberta Institute of Agrologists or related experience.
  2. Membership in the Alberta Institute of Agrologists
  3. Degree or Diploma (or work-related equivalent) in agriculture or related field (eg: CCA)
  4. Pesticide Applicators license (including Agricultural, Industrial, Forestry and Landscape spraying)
  5. Membership in Association of Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen
  6. Minimum of 5 years in the Agricultural field;
  7. Knowledge of plants, pests, insects and diseases and the related legislation.
  8. Experience in supervising and communicating with staff and in responding to concerns of elected officials and the public.
  9. Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, confidentiality and integrity.
  10. Ensure all operations are performed in a safe manner and in accordance with County policies and the law as set forth by Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulations and Code.
  11. Ability to provide and maintain a minimum satisfactory Class 5 Driver’s License abstract and acceptable criminal records check.
