2022 Casual Public Operations Positions

Do you have any experience working on roads, in construction or in agriculture? Would you like to make a difference in the community?

Lethbridge County is accepting applications for the 2022 operational season in our Public Works and Agriculture Services departments based out of our Picture Butte shop. We are looking for skilled team players who will be available to start as early as April 2022 for full-time seasonal work hours through August or October, depending on the position.

The number of vacancies will depend on the response to our seasonal call back.

Pay Class: 2022 CUPE Contract Class 1 – 4 ranging between $18.83 - $31.20/ hour depending on position and qualifications
Reports To: Department Supervisor or Lead Hands

Key Responsibilities Include:

Public Works department: operating various pieces of equipment as trained and required on a construction, gravel, base stabilization or projects crew (e.g. packer, dozer, scraper, grader, back hoe).

Agriculture Services department: park maintenance and sprinkler repair, operating various pieces of equipment as trained and required (e.g. mower, weed sprayer, 3-ton spray boom truck, tractor, seeder).

Perform manual labour and assist on various County projects ranging from crack filling and dust control to yard clean up.

Traffic control and flagging duties for construction or worksites.

Conduct daily inspections and providing basic daily maintenance and servicing of equipment.

Accurate record keeping of daily records, reports and timesheets.

Active participation in Lethbridge County’s Health and Safety program.

Various other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Must have a minimum of a Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing. A Class 3 Driver’s License with Q or Class 1 may be required depending on positions available. A 5-year driver’s abstract will be required to ensure compliance with County Policy.

Minimum grade 12 High School Education, GED (General Education Diploma) or equivalent.

Positions in Public Works department: preference will be given to candidates with previous equipment operation experience in areas including road or general construction, gravelling, oiling, patching, bridge repair and dust control.

Positions in Agriculture Services department: preference will be given to candidates with experience operating tractors, mowers and other related farm equipment. Experience with maintenance and repairs is an asset. These positions can be a great fit for students or semi-retired farmers.

Must have experience and knowledge in the operation of various light equipment including hand and power tools.

Ability to work independently and be a self-starter.

Physically fit and able to lift loads of up to 50 kg.

Flagging and additional safety training is considered an asset.

Must be adaptable to worksites that include a high level of dust, grease, mud or noise and outdoor temperatures that vary from hot to cold.

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with other staff members, supervisors and the general public.

Ability to identify, assess and report existing or potential health and safety hazards.

A satisfactory criminal record check is required for all County positions.

Working Conditions:

These positions will work 9-hour days Monday through Thursday (7:00am - 4:30pm) and 8 hours on Friday (7:00am - 3:30pm) out of our Picture Butte Shop. Positions may be subject to overtime in order to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
