Preamble:

WHEREAS the Government of Canada has eliminated the Goods and Services Tax for municipalities; AND WHEREAS the elimination of the GST should be extended to public school divisions and in particular to homes for the aged;

Operative Clause:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties urge the federal government to rebate 100 per cent of the GST for public school divisions and publicly funded homes for the aged.

Member Background:

This spring the federal government announced that it would rebate the total GST for municipalities, which is gratefully appreciated. This resolution requests that this be extended to more public bodies, in particular, public school divisions and homes for the aged, and could perhaps be extended to other like public bodies funded by local taxation.

RMA Background:

The AAMDC has no resolutions currently in effect with respect to this issue.

Development:

In February 2007, Canada Revenue Agency agreed management bodies could apply for municipal status and claim a rebate of 100 per cent of the GST paid on purchases.
