This position is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of parks, playgrounds, trails and any other related park amenities.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Inspect, maintain, and improve outdoor recreational amenities and assets including sports fields, trail systems, park structures/amenities, playgrounds, washroom facilities, outdoor ice surfaces, and natural assets such as trees.
- Ensure adherence to recognized industry standards and applicable legislation, regulations and established County policies and practices.
- Supervise, mentor and train workers including the daily assignment of tasks and/or project work.
- Complete performance management within applicable work units including completion of regular quality control inspections and ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Operate and train others in the operation of various equipment to perform work including tractors, chainsaw, ride-on lawn mowers, push mowers, gas powered and electric hand tools, skid steers, weed trimmers, utility terrain vehicles, pickup trucks and trailers.
- Ensure workers are capable for the tasks assigned by establishing competency.
- Maintain all related equipment and perform minor repairs.
- Maintain detailed records of work and equipment maintenance activities performed.
- Collaborate effectively and participate in special event preparations.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor.
- Adjust schedule and participate in an on-call rotation to support seasonal operational changes.
- Adhere to all applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System and the Sturgeon County Records Management System.
Requirements:
- Two (2) year diploma from a college or technical institute applicable to Parks, or five (5) years equivalent experience
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the tasks and operation of equipment assigned to the Parks Maintenance section.
- Parks and Sport Fields Operator Level 2 Certification would be an asset.
- CSA Playground Certification would be an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with an acceptable Driver’s Abstract.
- Standard First Aid Certificate or the ability to obtain prior to start date.
- Defensive Driving Course Certificate or the ability to obtain prior to start date.
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills, including ability to promote teamwork, support staff in adapting to new and changing situations, and resolve conflict.
- Ability to perform medium lifting of 25 kgs and to perform strenuous work outdoors for extended time periods.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with supervisor, co-workers and the public.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Mechanical knowledge and aptitude to repair and maintain lawn maintenance or small engines equipment.
